Make sure you are realistic about the amount of time the Project Manager will need to spend on the project during the initial stages.

Ensure recruitment for the project is of paramount importance and that there is always a contingency in place.

Find out all lead times for delivery of equipment and make sure this ordered at an early stage.

If any part of your project relies on other teams completing work, make sure that you have good working relationships and a set of assured deadlines from them (e.g. renovation work).

All stakeholders and interested parties should be kept informed of progress but for those not on the project board/team, it should be made clear that for them to have any input it must be through the proper project management structure.

Use the knowledge and experience that is already out there and examples from other projects. This will also ensure you have a support network.

Be prepared to adapt your protocols to the local circumstances and user needs. One size will not fit all.

Remain positive. It is far easier to achieve what you need and get all stakeholders on board.

Make sure you have a local champion for the project. If things don’t go according to plan then there is someone who can help escalate matters.

Ensure that as well as recruitment, all training needs have been addressed for all staff and that a joint session is also in place so that everyone has a thorough understanding of each other's roles.
